PALM COAST TILE

Tile installation in Port Orange homes

Much of Port Orange is made up of subdivisions built over the last few decades. The homes are typically on concrete slabs, often with an open kitchen and living area, a primary bathroom with a tub and separate shower, and a screened lanai at the back.

Homes like these rarely have serious structural issues for tile. The projects here are upgrades: replacing original finishes that have aged with something the owners have chosen for themselves.

COMMON PROJECTS

The upgrades Port Orange homeowners ask about

Four projects come up again and again in homes of this age and layout.

The primary bathroom shower

Original showers in these homes are often small, with a fiberglass pan or basic wall tile. Rebuilding it as a larger tiled shower, sometimes by removing the garden tub, is the most requested project. See shower tile installation.

One floor through the main living area

Replacing carpet and small-format tile with a single large-format or wood-look tile through the kitchen, living and dining areas. See tile installation.

A kitchen backsplash

Many of these kitchens were built with only a short strip of countertop material behind the counter. A full tile backsplash is a quick upgrade. See kitchen backsplash installation.

The lanai

Tiling the bare concrete of a screened lanai so it feels like part of the house. It needs exterior-rated tile. See pool deck and lanai tile.

Getting an open floor plan right

In an open plan the floor is seen all at once, so the layout carries more weight than it does in separate rooms.

Where the pattern starts

The layout is planned from the longest sight line, usually from the front door toward the back of the house, so the tile looks straight from where people see it most.

Flatness over a large area

Large-format tile shows any dip or ridge in the slab as an uneven edge. Over a big open area the slab is checked and leveled where needed before tile is set.

PLANNING

Planning tips for a larger tile project

A few decisions made early keep a multi-room project moving.

Order all the tile at once

Tile is made in batches, and color can vary between them. Buying the full quantity together, with extra for cuts, avoids a visible difference between rooms.

Decide what happens at the kitchen

Tile can run under the appliances and stop at the cabinets, which is the usual approach when the cabinets are staying.

Baseboards

New flooring usually changes the floor height slightly. Baseboards are either removed and reinstalled or finished with a small trim at the bottom.

Living in the house during the work

A large floor is usually done in sections so part of the house stays usable. We go over the order with you beforehand.

F.A.Q

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Port Orange?

Yes. We are based in Palm Coast and take projects in Port Orange. Call or text with your address and the work you are planning.

Can you remove a garden tub and build a bigger shower?

In most layouts, yes. The tub is removed, the drain is relocated by a plumber, and the shower is framed, waterproofed and tiled in the larger space.

Can the same tile run through the whole house?

Yes. A single tile through connected rooms makes a home look larger. The slab is checked for flatness across the whole area first, and movement joints are placed where the layout needs them.

Does a lanai need a different tile from the inside of the house?

Yes. Even when it is screened, a lanai gets rain, humidity and temperature swings. It needs tile rated for exterior use, with a finish that is not slippery when wet.

Should I choose tile or LVP for the living area?

Tile lasts longer, stays cool and is unaffected by water or sun. LVP is softer, quieter and faster to install. Our LVP page compares the two in more detail.
