PALM COAST TILE
How to compare bathroom tile contractors
If you are searching for a bathroom tile contractor, you are probably collecting two or three estimates and trying to work out why the numbers are different. Price matters, but most of the difference between tile contractors is in things that are hard to see on a quote: what they do before the tile goes on, and who actually does the work.
This page is meant to help you compare, whether or not you hire us. For the work itself, see bathroom tile installation.
BEFORE YOU HIRE
Questions worth asking any bathroom tile contractor
These apply to us as much as to anyone else you call.
How will the shower be waterproofed?
You should get a specific answer: what goes on the walls, how the pan is built and how the two are joined. “The tile and grout are waterproof” is not an answer.
What is included in the price?
Ask whether demolition, disposal, floor preparation, setting materials, grout and sealant are in the number, and what would count as an extra.
What happens if there is damage behind the old tile?
In bathrooms it is common to find wet backer board or subfloor. Ask how that would be handled and how you would be told.
Can I see recent work and reviews?
Photos of finished bathrooms and reviews from local customers tell you more than a list of services. It is also reasonable to ask any contractor for their license and insurance documents.

WHO DOES WHAT
Tile contractor, general contractor or handyman?
The right kind of contractor depends on how much of the bathroom is changing.
A tile contractor
Specializes in the tile and everything under it: preparation, waterproofing, layout and installation. A good fit when the room is staying where it is and the surfaces are being replaced.
A general contractor
Coordinates several trades. Makes sense when walls or plumbing are moving, or the bathroom is being enlarged.
A handyman
Can be fine for a small patch or a simple backsplash. A shower depends on correct waterproofing, so it is worth hiring someone who builds them regularly.
What we do
Tile is our trade. We tile showers, bathroom floors, walls and tub surrounds, and we repair existing tile. See shower tile, bathroom floors and tile repair.

F.A.Q
Frequently asked questions
What does a bathroom tile contractor do?
A tile contractor removes the old surfaces, prepares the floor and walls, builds and waterproofs the shower, and installs and grouts the tile. Plumbing and electrical work are done by those trades.
How many estimates should I get for a bathroom?
Two or three is usually enough to see the range. Make sure each one describes the same scope, especially demolition, waterproofing and floor preparation, or the prices will not be comparable.
Why are tile estimates for the same bathroom so different?
Usually because they do not include the same work. One contractor may include demolition, disposal, a waterproofing membrane and floor leveling, while another prices the tile setting alone. Ask each one what is covered.
Can I see examples of your bathroom work?
Yes. There are photos of finished bathrooms on this site, and our Google profile has reviews from local customers, several with photos they took themselves.
Do you help with choosing tile?
Yes. Customers mention in their reviews that Jonathan talked through options and tile selection with them. If you have not chosen yet, we can tell you what works well in a shower, on a floor and on a wall before you buy.
