PALM COAST TILE
Tile installation in Ormond Beach, room by room or through the whole house
Many Ormond Beach homes were built several decades ago, on concrete slabs, with the tile and carpet of their time. Many are now being updated by owners who want one continuous floor through the living areas in place of a patchwork of carpet, small ceramic tile and vinyl.
That makes floor replacement the most common tile project here, and it is the main subject of this page. Bathrooms and kitchens are covered further down.
FLOORS
Replacing the floors in an older slab home
Running new tile through several rooms is a bigger job than tiling one, mainly because of what has to happen first.
Taking up the old tile
Old ceramic tile bonded to concrete has to be chipped up and the mortar ground off the slab. It is the dustiest and noisiest part of the job, and it is worth asking any contractor how they control the dust.
Cracks in the slab
Slabs of this age usually have some hairline cracks. They are treated with a crack-isolation membrane so they are less likely to show up later as cracked tile.
One floor across several rooms
When the same tile runs through connected rooms, the whole area is checked for flatness and the layout is planned from the main sight line, so the pattern stays straight through every doorway.
Tile that looks like wood
Wood-look porcelain plank is a popular choice for this kind of project. If you prefer something softer and quicker to install, luxury vinyl plank is the alternative.
PALM COAST TILE
Beachside and mainland
The Halifax River divides Ormond Beach, and the two sides are somewhat different for tile work.
On the beachside
Homes and condos near the ocean deal with salt air, sand and higher humidity. Bathrooms benefit from careful waterproofing, and porches and balconies need tile made for exterior use.
On the mainland
West of the river the housing is mostly single-family homes on slabs. Floor replacement, shower conversions and kitchen backsplashes are the usual projects.

F.A.Q
Frequently asked questions
Do you serve Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea?
Yes. We are based in Palm Coast, directly north, and both are part of the area we work in.
How messy is removing old tile from a concrete floor?
It is the messiest part of a flooring job. Tile and mortar are broken up and the slab is ground clean, which creates dust. Rooms are closed off and covered as far as possible, and it helps to move belongings out of the work area beforehand.
Can new tile go over the old tile instead?
Sometimes, if the old floor is solid and flat. The catch is height: a second layer raises the floor at exterior doors, appliances and transitions, and that often rules it out.
Will cracks in my slab crack the new tile?
They can if nothing is done about them. Hairline cracks are covered with a crack-isolation membrane before tiling. Wide cracks, or cracks where one side is higher than the other, need to be looked at more closely first.
Can we stay in the house while the floors are replaced?
Usually, yes. The work is done in sections where possible, though rooms being tiled cannot be walked on until the tile has set. We go over the sequence with you before starting.
